Many drug addicts leave behind a "wreckage" than can take a number of years to rectify, although this is something that drug addiction treatment can help to solve.
This is according to Canadian heroin and cocaine user Leonard Green, who told a provincial court that he had been fighting drug addiction and its associated "shrapnel" for the past two years, The Leduc Rep reports.
After pleading guilty to two charges of uttering a forged document, the 38-year-old told the court that shrapnel means "the wreckage you leave behind - the lying and stealing".
"I'm just trying to deal with all the stuff in my past and move forward," the newspaper quoted him as saying.
Since being charged, Mr Green has successfully been receiving drug addiction treatment, has passed random drug tests and remains in a steady job.
After receiving a 12-month suspended sentence, he was told he will have to continue receiving drug addiction treatment.
In 2007, Statistics Canada reported that offences related to drug use in the country had reached a 30 year high.
