An addiction treatment worker from Manchester is in line for a top award for his efforts to help people through their addiction recovery.
Anthony Mellor, a community substance misuse worker for Manchester Drug Service, provides help and support to around 40 people with addiction problems, offering advice, guidance and a shoulder to lean on for both those with the problem and their families.
His efforts have seen him nominated for the prestigious Tackling Drugs Changing Lives Drug Worker of the Year Award, which would also provide £10,000 to help his local communities tackle addiction problems.
Mr Mellor's efforts are all the more remarkable because he used to be an addict himself, struggling to cope with cocaine addiction and dependence on a variety of other drugs, including heroin.
"I dont hide my own background or recovery. I want to show them there is a way out," Mr Mellor explained.
However, he added that it must be up to each individual addict to find their way out of their problems, explaining that everyone is different and each addiction recovery story is unique.
Many rehab clinics recognise the importance of helping addicts on an individual basis and offer patients their own tailored addiction rehabilitation programme that is designed to fit specifically with their needs, rather than providing a one-size-fits-all solution.
