Specialist recovery groups should be established to help people receiving drug addiction help not to relapse.
This is the recommendation of addictions expert Dr David Best, who has compiled a new report for the Scottish government calling for the setting up of these communities, The Herald reports.
Despite admitting that it's risky for recovering addicts to be brought together, Dr Best, who lectures in addictions at the University of West Scotland, said these initiatives have already proved a success in certain parts of Edinburgh.
"There is a big problem with people coming out of rehab and going back to where they came from and struggling on their own to avoid dealers and other drug users," he told the newspaper.
"Sober living housing for people who have completed treatment and casual meeting spaces where they can get together and share experiences have real potential to help."
According to the Scottish government, there were 455 drug-related deaths in 2007 - an eight per cent increase from 2006's total.
