As many as 10,000 people in Kirklees could be in need of alcohol addiction support, new figures have suggested.
According to Kirklees Alcohol Advisory Service (KAAS), approximately 3,000 individuals approach the organisation every year in search of alcohol addiction therapy, the Huddersfield Daily Examiner reports.
In an interview with the newspaper, KAAS chairman Norman Macleod, who himself received successful alcohol addiction treatment in the past, said that thousands more people in the West Yorkshire region could be in need of similar help.
According to the organisation's figures, between 70 and 80 people access its services every week.
"Alcoholism is the only illness your brain will not diagnose," Mr Macleod explained.
"The stories are all the same. People are drinking too much alcohol and the alcohol controls them rather than them controlling the alcohol."
Mr Macleod went on to say that, while affected individuals experience similar symptoms, each deals with their addiction in a different way, something that can pose challenges to drug addiction centres.
Despite this, many people successfully seek addiction help, often with the backing of friends and family members.
According to the Institute of Alcohol Studies, alcohol is responsible for ten per cent of all premature deaths in Europe.
