A growing number of young people in Kent are in need of alcohol addiction treatment as problems with alcohol are beginning to outweigh concerns over drug abuse, it has been suggested.
Your Canterbury reports that issues surrounding alcohol addiction are now more of a threat to young people in the area than drug abuse.
Angela Slaven, director of youth services at Kent county council, told the newspaper that there had been a ten per cent increase over the past year in the number of under-18s heading to rehab centres for problems with alcohol addiction.
However, the number of people seeking addiction treatment for drug-related problems such as ecstasy, heroin and cocaine in the region fell by 47 per cent.
Furthermore the number of young people looking for a rehab clinic to help with their cannabis addictions fell by 26 per cent, Ms Slaven revealed.
"There are a whole range of issues around alcohol," she explained.
"It is easy to access and cheap - you can go into a supermarket and buy vodka for £7," she added.
Earlier this month, statistics from the National Treatment Agency revealed the number of young people treated for cocaine, cannabis and ecstasy abuse in the UK has surged to record levels over the past year.
