One of Australia's best-known sports stars has said he is receiving gambling addiction support after years of gambling problems.
Brendan Feyola, a forward for Australian rules team the Brisbane Lions, told the AFL Footy Show on Nine Network that he was receiving gambling addiction help with the support of his club, the Australian Associated Press reports.
The news provider reported him as saying that he has a gambling addiction and that he is taking the appropriate steps to combat it.
"There's obviously plenty of speculation and I want to get on the front foot about it," he explained on the television programme.
"It's been going on for a few years and you don't think you have a problem and it's a bit of fun, then it catches up to you."
Feyola went on to say that, while his addiction had not affected his game, he hoped that receiving gambling addiction intervention will help to make him "a better person".
It is understood that Lions coach Michael Voss is supporting Feyola, who has been receiving gambling addiction counselling since February.
According to Australian Gambling Statistics, Australians gambled $142 billion during 2004-05, the vast majority of which ($72 million) was on gambling machines.
