Gordon Brown has failed to give his full support to proposals outlined by the government's chief medical officer to help tackle alcohol addiction and crack down on problem drinkers.
The prime minister has given a cautious response to Sir Liam Donaldson's proposals to introduce a minimum price for alcoholic drinks that could help to reduce the number of people seeking alcohol addiction treatment.
"We don't want the responsible, sensible majority of moderate drinkers to have to pay more or suffer as a result of the excesses of a minority," said Mr Brown in response to the proposals.
However, campaign groups have backed the introduction of pricing limits that could end cheap drink offers in supermarkets and so-called Happy Hours in pubs, claiming that these offers can encourage binge drinking and fuel alcohol addiction.
Sir Liam claimed: "England has a drink problem and the whole of society bears the burden."
He added: "Cheap alcohol is killing us as never before."
Many rehab clinics across the UK can provide opportunities for people with alcohol addictions to receive help and addiction treatment.
rehab clinics often offer personalised addiction treatment programmes that are tailored to the needs of each individual.
