People who have attended rehab clinics to overcome their alcohol addiction should avoid drinking even a glass of wine a day despite the potential health benefits, a center asserts.
The Ambrosia Treatment Center (ATC) warns that even casual consumption can lead to relapse and a risk of re-developing a dependency.
Citing the benefits of drinking a glass of wine a day, the treatment service says the positive outcomes do not outweigh the risks this can present a former alcoholic.
"The old glass of wine a day adage isn't even an option for someone suffering from alcohol addiction and it is critical to learn alternatives when seeking a nutritional-savvy lifestyle," ATC claims.
Suggesting the amount people can consume safely varies in line with a number of factors, including their age, gender, weight and genes, the center states that some medical professionals avoid advising people to consume any set volume.
Earlier this month, a study published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research revealed that chronic consumption, such as that characterized by alcohol addiction, is more harmful than acute or binge drinking.
