Scientists in the US are attempting to develop a medication that could help people with a cocaine addiction.
A research team at the Marquette University in Milwaukee claim that drug addiction is the result of a chemical change in the brain, according to the Chicago Tribune.
They have been awarded a $1.4 million grant (£855,000) in order to ascertain what the change is, with the aim of developing a drug that can interfere with the cocaine addiction process.
Scientists from Marquette will join forces with other researchers at the University of Wisconsin and the University of North Carolina, a well as the Stanford Research Institute.
Around 19 per cent of UK adults have suffered from a drug addiction or knows someone who has, according to a survey conducted by DrugScope.
The study revealed that over 1.2 million people have been addicted to illegal drugs. It also found that some 88 per cent of those questioned agreed that people who develop drug addictions need help and support, the Guardian reports.
