Increasing numbers of people in Ohio are requiring drug addiction support as levels of prescription medication abuse continue to rise.
This is according to an opinion piece in the Zanesville Times Recorder, which said that this can be attributed to the number of unintentional drug overdoses between 2004 and 2008.
In January, the newspaper began a progamme of educating its readership by examining the issue from all sides - not only did it feature opinions from drug addiction experts, but it also spoke to those requiring drug addiction intervention.
Over the course of the four years, almost 6,000 residents in the state died after an unintentional drug overdose and, having spoken to local experts, the newspaper reported that two words were repeated a number of times: education and treatment.
"They believe the public needs to be educated about how easy it is to become addicted to painkillers, how easy it is to get these narcotics and how these addictions often lead to the use of illegal drugs, which then spawns criminal acts so the users can continue to feed their addictions," the opinion piece stated.
drug addiction treatment in the state is planned, initiated and coordinated by Ohio's Department of Alcohol and drug addiction Services, which has an annual budget of $195 million.
