A range of new addiction programs is being offered to patients in Sioux Falls thanks to the work of one organisation.
Face It group volunteers are making weekly phone calls to individuals receiving alcohol and addiction treatment, while the organisation is also helping its clients to find work, ArgusLeader.com reports.
In addition, the addiction center offers a referral service to other agencies and the provision of a drop-in workspace.
Face It chief executive officer Matt Waltz, who abused both drink and drugs in his teens, told the website that the group's intention is to change the mindset about addictions.
"This is part of a new line of thinking in addiction," he explained.
"Treating it as a sin didn't work. Treating it as a choice has not worked. Treating it as an acute short-term disease hasn't worked very well."
A recent study revealed that approximately ten per cent of the Sioux Falls population are dependent on certain substances, with just 5,000 of these seeking addiction help.
The other 18,000, it has been suggested, either try to conceal their addiction or ignore their addiction symptoms.
According to the United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, approximately 180 million people around the world are consuming drugs for recreational purposes.
