A charity based in the north has reported a rise in alcoholics and drug addicts seeking advice due to the recession, it has been reported.
The Sheffield Star reveals that the Sheffield Alcohol Advisory Service notes more people are turning to substance abuse due to financial issues and stress.
Director Nicola Smith told the newspaper: "As the recession bites and people are out of work, drugs and alcohol are some of the things people sometimes turn to.
"Certainly we have had an increase in referrals since April."
Ms Smith added that addiction recovery charities have also been feeling the pinch, with many working to tighter budgets and having reduced access to funding.
In related news, it was recently reported that the number of people seeking advice for cocaine abuse in Ireland has soared in the past seven years.
According to figures from the Health Research Board, the number of people seeking help for cocaine addiction rose 177 per cent between 2002 and 2007.
Some 12 million people in Europe and America use cocaine regularly, according to statistics from Drug-Aware.
