A conference looking at the impact of gambling addiction and considering ways to tackle the problem in the US has been held in St Louis.

A gambling addiction conference aimed at working out new ways to prevent people suffering from such problems has got underway in St Louis.

It is hoped the event will help find new ways to reduce the number of people needing to go to rehab centers because of their addiction, instead discovering new addiction treatment methods that reduce the likelihood of them developing a serious problem in the first place.

Much of the work at the conference is looking at ways in which the chemicals in the brain are stimulated by gambling and how the act of gambling can become like a drug to many people.

Using the various casinos in St Louis, researchers can study the reactions of individuals and it is hoped their findings could result in improved addiction treatment methods for gambling addicts.

There are growing concerns in the US that the number of people entering rehab clinics because of gambling problems will soar during the global recession.

Surveys throughout the US have suggested that the recession has coincided with an increase in the number of people gambling on a regular basis, as those who have lost jobs or are facing redundancy look to secure their futures through a quick win.
