The NHS and financial advice organisations need to improve practitioners' understanding about gambling problems and publicise their support services more effectively, says an addiction charity.
Published by Gamcare, the research found that gamblers commonly have debts spiralling out of control, with many owing £600,000 or more.
The organisation's chief executive Andy McLellan advised a more joined-up approach between local authorities, health providers and addiction specialists.
The study made a number of recommendations, including providing more publicity for financial advice helplines, creating links between addiction charities and the justice system and improving awareness of the issue among employers.
According to a recent report published in the Guardian, more than two-thirds of the UK population (68 per cent) have gambled in the last year.
