New drug addiction treatment centres could be established across India at the suggestion of one of the country's most powerful politicians.
Union minister of social justice and empowerment Mukul Wasnik believes that drug addiction facilities will help solve India's problems with substance abuse, although he admitted that there is a lack of statistics indicating how serious the issue is, The Times of India reports.
"I would have to admit that data available on drug abuse has not been of such a nature that can give us a total insight into the entire situation," he explained to the newspaper.
He went on to say that the government has been working alongside approximately 350 voluntary organisations in working out the best ways of dealing with the situation.
Mr Wasnik was speaking after the publication of the International Narcotic Control Board's annual report, which showed that drug addiction support is more likely to be needed by India's teenagers and young adults.
It also revealed a rise in the number of young women abusing drugs, with the gap between male and female users narrowing markedly.
India's government currently manages 100 addiction centres across the country.
