A rehab centre in Ireland is offering a range of top class services for alcohol addicts and it has been claimed the clinic could become a model for others to follow.
According to the Irish Independent, the Temple Centre, set up at St Patrick's University Hospital in Dublin, can provide all the top quality addiction treatment facilities offered by some of the best private clinics in the world, such as the renowned Priory in the UK.
Dr Geraldine O'Keeffe, consultant psychiatrist and director of the addictions programme at the hospital, told the newspaper that binge drinking in Ireland and across the Western world is becoming an increasing concern and could be creating major health problems for the future.
"With younger women binge-drinking more than older women, we are storing up problems for the future as well," she explained.
However, the new clinic is focussing not only on delivering a high standard of addiction treatment, but is also looking to ensure the appropriate rehabilitation support is given, even after the patient has left the rehab clinic.
"Addiction is a chronic relapsing condition. People do relapse. It's a lifetime problem and our service works with each patient as an individual," said Dr O'Keeffe.
In the UK, efforts to reduce the risk of people binge drinking and becoming addicted to alcohol are taking the form of proposals to increase the price of alcohol.
The government's chief medical adviser, Sir Liam Donaldson, has suggested introducing a minimum price per unit of alcohol in an effort to make it harder for people to get hold of high-strength alcoholic drinks.
