A city in British Columbia has improved its drug addiction programs for residents thanks to a new facility being better equipped to accommodate patients.
Terrace's Ksan House Society, the Northern Health Authority and the local social development and housing ministry have provided four beds for those in need of drug addiction support to stay in, the Terrace Standard reports.
Carol Sabo, Ksan House Society's executive director, said that her organisation had spoken about offering drug addiction help for a number of years.
"Today is finally the day that we're opening supportive recovery beds in Terrace," she told the newspaper.
The beds can be used by patients attending the health authority's day drug addiction treatment program and are located at Ksan's new emergency shelter building.
They will be especially useful for people on the program who leave outside of Terrace and would otherwise have no access to addiction services.
Five people have so far used the beds, while separate ones could be provided specifically for young people attending the addiction program.
Recent research from the Canadian Centre on substance abuse found that half of people seeking drug addiction support in the country also suffer from a mental illness.
