A lawyer who has come through a drug addiction with the help of a rehabilitation program has been elected as a state district judge, a source reveals.
Kevin Fine has become one of Harris County's four drug court arbiters, after overcoming a substance abuse habit at a cocaine rehabilitation centre ten years ago, the Houston Chronicle reports.
He admits to engaging in cannabis abuse while a teenager and moving on to alcohol abuse and cocaine addiction while practising as a lawyer.
An employer approached him and persuaded him to undergo rehabilitation treatment, which helped Mr Fine overcome his problem.
"I was out of cocaine. I was out of money. And the four horsemen of addiction - terror, bewilderment, frustration and despair - were on their way," he tells the news provider.
As part of his campaign for the position, he told voters his life experiences as a former substance addiction sufferer meant he would be able to best help those going through the county's drug courts.
His campaign describes his employment history, identifying his role in law firm Schneider and McKinney and highlighting his 13-year history practising in the field of criminal law.
