There has been a rise in the number of people seeking help from addiction clinics in the state of Maryland in the US.
According to the Maryland Gazette, Suburban Hospital's addiction treatment Center in Rockville saw a 64 per cent rise in the number of addiction cases coming through its doors between August and December last year, compared to the same period in 2007.
Many more people are coming to the center with alcohol problems, the newspaper reports, with the impact of the global economic downturn thought to be a major factor behind the growth.
Beth Kane-Davidson, director of Suburban's treatment center, explained: "We have people in the program that have lost their jobs and have had difficulty finding employment, which creates a whole other aspect of the kind of counseling care that we give them."
She continued: "They're not only trying to get off of a substance and stay off a substance, now they have a major void in their life in that they have unstructured time."
The Miami Herald recently reported that Florida had seen a surge in the number of people admitting gambling problems linked to blackjack, with experts suggesting the rise could be in part fuelled by people try to gamble their way out of financial troubles caused by the global credit crunch.
