Robbie Williams has revealed that his addiction to prescription drugs threatened his career and his life.
According to the former Take That singer, he spent three years battling with his addiction to anti-depressants and painkillers before checking himself into a drug rehab clinic in Arizona in 2007.
The pop star, who has had a string of number one singles, told Stern magazine that his girlfriend, Ayda Fields, was instrumental in helping him kick his addiction.
Williams told the publication: "It was damn serious - Robbie Williams does not go into rehab just if his life gets a bit out of control.
"Death had to knock on my door to help me with my decision."
His manager, Kevin Kinsella, added that he was "out of control" and "nearly died" due to his destructive personality, which saw him use prescription drugs to replace his dependence on alcohol and cocaine.
The singer is a good example of the effectiveness of addiction centres for fighting chemical dependencies.
Williams is now scheduled to open the Electric Proms at the Roundhouse in Camden on October 20th in his first show for three years, his website states.
