The number of people in need of drug addiction support in the South Caucasus region increases by 1,000 people every year.
This is the warning from Mazahir Efendiyev, manager of the UN''s drugs control programme in the geopolitical region, who has called for tougher action to combat the problem, News.Az reports.
Located close to Turkey, Russia and Iran, South Caucasus lies between Europe and Asia and accommodates all of Armenia and the majority of Azerbaijan and Georgia.
Mr Efendiyev told the news provider that the increase in the number of people in the region needing drug addiction intervention is "not a good situation".
"The growth in the number of drug addicts show the incompleteness of actions taken in this direction," he commented.
"There is a need for more thorough actions in order to fill in this gap."
He also said that the problem of addiction was prevalent in both the north and south of Armenia.
Drug control in the region is managed by the South Caucasus Anti-Drug Programme, whose aim it is to reinforce drug control capabilities and provide drug addiction help to those in need of treatment.
