A new drug addiction facility looks set to be built in Essex after a local council lent its backing to proposals.
Council officers in Southend have recommended plans for approval for a three-storey drug addiction treatment centre to be built in Clarence Road, the Echo reports.
It will be built and managed by charity Crime Reduction Initiatives and will be open six days a week between 09:00 and 18:00.
drug addiction counsellors will be based at the centre to offer help and support to individuals hoping to combat their habit, while the facility will also provide needle exchange services.
According to the newspaper, a council report on the proposals contained a letter from a local police community support officer, who said drug users in the region currently have "little specialist help" available to them.
"Without help, users are likely to continue to re-offend, thereby driving up crime and antisocial behaviour," the letter stated.
"The continued success of this project is, therefore, pivotal to Southend if we are to take active steps to reduce the number of drug-related offences committed in Southend."
Individuals using the new centre may be encouraged to embark on a residential drug addiction programme, which will allow them to begin to lead a normal life.
