Knowing the different types of gambling addicts can be an important way for rehab centers to properly treat people's problems, it has been claimed.
According to La Paloma rehab clinic in Memphis, it is important to be aware of the different types of problem gamblers because doing so can help friends and family spot the signs and ensure they receive appropriate addiction recovery services to deal with their issues.
"There are a variety of different types of the characteristics [of gambling addicts] and reasons for indulging are varied," the rehab center suggests.
Among the different types identified by La Paloma are the 'relief and escape' gambler who uses gambling to unwind after a difficult and stressful day at work, as well as the 'compulsive gambler', for whom gambling is his or her life, and the 'antisocial personality', who will try to win at gambling games by any means possible.
Knowing these traits is not only important for people to recognise when they have a problem, but it is also a crucial part of the addiction treatment process, because the reasons for developing the addiction will differ from person to person.
Many rehab clinics are aware today of the importance of treating each individual with their own recovery programme, rather than persevering with a one-size-fits-all approach that may not touch on the issues of all recovering addicts.
