A new police campaign is being launched with the aim of cracking down on alcohol and drug abuse.
Operation Sapphire is to run in the Grantham area of Lincolnshire and will attempt to control substance abuse, which it believes is the root cause of many criminal acts.
Deploying zero-tolerance tactics and both uniformed and plainclothed officers, it is hoped drink-related crimes such as shoplifting and antisocial behaviour will decrease in the run-up to Christmas.
As part of the initiative, all drinks being consumed outside of licensed premises will be confiscated and anyone displaying drunken, disorderly behaviour will immediately be arrested.
In addition, drug abuse will also be heavily monitored and regardless of classification anyone using an illegal substance on the streets will also be put into custody.
Finally, CCTV will be deployed in an effort to identify and catch shoplifters in the local area.
Nick Smith, a police constable with the force, calls on the general public and shopkeepers to support Operation Sapphire.
"We want every single incident of shoplifting, drunken behaviour, suspected drug deals and antisocial activity to be reported to us as soon as they happen," he states.
An additional six officers are being brought into the area to help with the project, which Mr Smith asserts is enough to allow the problem to be tackled effectively.
He says: "We want to make life very uncomfortable for any criminals or nuisance people in the area."
In related news, the north-west has launched a campaign to reduce the frequency of violent and aggressive behaviour targeted at ambulance staff.
