A new rehab centre aimed at helping people with gambling addictions is to be opened in Weston-super-Mare.
Broadway Lodge rehabilitation centre will provide treatment to people who are suffering from addiction.
The centre is to be run as a charity and funded by GamCare, which was set up by the gambling industry to help people with addictions fight their problems.
It is thought the new centre will see plenty of business over the months ahead, as the recession results in more people seeking treatment related to gambling.
"I think it's been proven that during a recession gambling does increase and money needs to be put aside to help those people who fall on hard times," chief executive Brian Dudley told the BBC.
As the impact of the recession forces more people out of their jobs, there are concerns that many people made redundant will look to gambling as a way to raise cash and solve their debt problems.
But that can lead to gambling addictions taking hold and result in more people seeking out rehab centres for treatment.
Meanwhile, the recession in the UK is causing more people to suffer from depression, according to a new survey.
Research from bank Lloyds TSB has claimed a fifth of people now describe themselves as depressed as a result of the economic downturn.
