The demand for gambling addiction help appears to be on the rise in one US state, particularly with the impending start of the college and professional football seasons.
This is the warning of the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling (WCPG), which is expected to receive a record number of calls from those in need of gambling addiction support, the Green Bay Press Gazette reports.
The state of the economy has also been touted as a reason for the rise, with officials believing that as many as 16,000 calls could be received this year - a notable increase from the 14,604 calls recorded in 2009.
WCPG executive director Rose Gruber told the news provider that problem gamblers "are all around us".
"After having done this for 13 years, I firmly believe that everyone probably knows a compulsive gambler - you probably just don't know it, because they're really good at hiding it," she commented.
Research has shown that approximately 80 per cent of US citizens have gambled in the past year, while 85 per cent have gambled at least once in their lives.
