A north-east woman has highlighted the importance of seeking gambling addiction intervention after being reprimanded for stealing thousands of pounds to pay off her debts.
Middlesbrough Teesside Crown Court heard yesterday (February 18th) that 33-year-old Sujata Chaudhry had developed a dangerous addiction to online bingo, which she played every night at her home, gazettelive.co.uk reports.
Instead of seeking gambling addiction help, Ms Chaudhry stole more than £12,000 from a local training charity in order to pay off her credit and debit card debt over a 15-month period.
According to the newspaper, Paul Abrahams, her lawyer, said that Ms Chaudhry had learnt from her mistakes and that the money will be repaid within a month, partly from her dead father's will.
"She had been playing online bingo, sitting in the house at night with a computer. I am sure she involved herself in that because of boredom, and it may be that if she goes out and does something that may be of benefit," he commented.
Individuals worried about a possible bingo addiction are encouraged to talk to other players, something that is possible thanks to chat facilities on some gambling websites.
