Women with alcohol addiction problems are more likely to receive treatment in a rehab clinic than men, a charity asserts.
A spokeswoman from Alcohol Concern claims females have a higher chance of going to the doctors than men, meaning the symptoms of problem drinking are more likely to be noticed.
Despite this, she says a number of additional cultural factors place extra pressure on men to drink frequently.
This includes the fact there is a work drinking culture which is more prominent among male colleagues and can encourage alcohol abuse and addiction, she states.
"Some studies have shown that men are more likely to reach for a bottle when they feel stressed. Women have a broader range of coping mechanisms than men do - for example, talking," the representative claims.
There is an ignorance surrounding the safe levels of consumption across both sexes, she says.
She says people are often aware that there are recommended daily limits for men and women but do not know what these are.
Recent figures produced by the Office for National Statistics have found more than a third of adults exceed their daily limits once a week.
