A Winnipeg drug addiction centre has celebrated its grand opening seven months after beginning its first treatment programmes.
Union Gospel Mission, a women-only drug addiction facility, was officially launched during a ceremony attended by representatives from the Canadian government, the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
The need for drug addiction intervention has already become apparent to the centre's staff and Adele Plett Bartel, the facility's manager, said the nature of drug addiction is "strong".
She explained to the newspaper that patients who have completed drug addiction therapy have discovered an inner peace that didn't exist during their time as drug abusers.
"You can see it, the difference. There's a peace that wasn't there before," she commented.
Esther Ann Boutin, a volunteer at the centre, said it is the small things that signal a successful drug addiction recovery, such as when a patient allows her to cut and style her hair.
According to Canada's Centres of Excellence for Women's Health, the use of illicit drugs such as crystal meth among girls and women "may be high or higher" than among men, which has highlighted the case for gender-specific prevention and treatment programmes.
